In Feb, the setting sun hits horseshoe falls in Yosemite just right to create an illusion of fire falling off the cliff. I missed out the last time I was in the area do to a weather delay in Texas causing me to miss my reservation. If you ever want to see this one you'll need to plan ahead and make reservations well in advance.
This one I need to just put on the calendar and do. There are several location along the Appalachian Mountains where every spring in May and June (exact dates vary by location and environmental conditions) where male fire flies synchronize their flashing in a mating ritual. Entire fields lights up with their glow in a neigh hypnotic pattern.
The Pikes Peak Ascent is a grueling 13.3 mile race from Manitou Springs, Colorado, to the 14,115 foot summit of Pikes Peak. With a vertical climb of 7,800 feet
COVID put this race on hold for me. You only get 6:30 to run up the mountain, so I'll definitely have to be back in moderately good endurance shape before I could hope to achieve this.
What can I say? glutton for punishment.
This time without a broken ankle. The one time I made it up to Alaska I suffered a high ankle sprain two days before my flight, and I could barely put weight on my foot for most of the trip let alone do any hiking, but I got to watch FSU beat Clemson with friends so not all bad. I certainly need to get back out there with some healthy legs under me to really explore the place, and this is the best trip I've seen for doing it. So I'm putting it here so I don't forget about it.
